East Wenatchee, WA – As April comes to end, Chelan-Douglas Health District wants to share news about their2nd annual Champions of Public Health event that happened on Monday, April 7th, honoring the remarkable individuals nominated for their outstanding contributions to the health and well-being of our community. This special gathering also served as the official kickoff for National Public Health Week, a nationwide initiative to raise awareness about the importance of public health.
The Champions of Public Health event recognized the dedication, innovation and tireless efforts of those who go above and beyond to protect and improve the health of our communities. Nominations received from across both counties, from promoting healthy lifestyles and ensuring access to care to advocating for policies that support a healthier population. Roy Huffstetler from Three Rivers Hospital was nominated for Rural and Small Community Outreach. This award highlights the efforts to reach populations with limited healthcare options, specifically to smaller communities. Cici Kamphaus from Columbia Valley Community Health was nominated for Leadership in Access to Care. The award recognizes the dedication to bridging gaps and removing barriers that prevent people from accessing essential healthcare services. Stan Smoke from Chelan County Emergency Management was nominated for Public Health Safety, which acknowledges the efforts that contribute to injury prevention, environmental safety, and overall community well-being. Cathy Meuret from the North Central Educational Service District, was nominated for the Lifetime Achievement Award. This award celebrates her longstanding commitment to public health. It honors her dedication, leadership, and expertise that have led to lasting improvements in community health, disease prevention, and injury reduction, inspiring future generations of health professionals. It was an honor to present these awards to our external partners as well as celebrating several of our staff.
Chelan-Douglas Health District staff partook in several activities during National Public Health week (April 7th through 13th) with daily activities that were planned in-house. Activities included taking nature walks, planting flowers, sharing resources that promote health equity and much more.
