Avian Influenza detected in neighboring County

No cases reported in Chelan or Douglas Counties

East Wenatchee, WA – The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) has confirmed a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI or H5N1), in a commercial poultry farm in Grant County. Washington State Department of Health (DOH), Grant County Health District (GCHD), and Chelan-Douglas Health District (CDHD) are monitoring for any illness among workers who may have been exposed.

At this time, no human cases or person-to-person spread of avian influenza has been identified in Chelan or Douglas Counties.

Most human cases of avian influenza have occurred after extended, close exposure to infected birds or prolonged contact with areas contaminated by the virus. Common symptoms include:

·        Eye redness and irritation (conjunctivitis)

·        Respiratory symptoms (cough, sore throat, shortness of breath)

·        Fever

·        Muscle or body and fatigue

·        Headaches

·        Nausea, vomiting and possible diarrhea

Individuals who have been in contact with infected birds, or someone diagnosed with avian influenza, are advised to monitor for symptoms for 10 days and seek medical attention if symptoms develop.

CDHD wants to remind the public to take these preventative measures:

·        Avoid touching wild or domestic (dead or sick) birds, especially in outbreak areas

·        Practice good hygiene by washing hands frequently with soap and water

·        Wear protective gear if working with birds

·        Get the seasonal flu vaccine

CDHD is actively supporting regional partners by coordinating with GCHD and the DOH monitoring local conditions and assisting with personal protective equipment (PPE)requests as needed.
